Counseling For Men

From A Man With Real World Experience

If you’ve landed on this website looking for a therapist, you’re likely struggling. Perhaps you are overstressed and unhappy with your work. Or, you’re having problems at home with your partner or your kids.

Or maybe you are not even sure what’s wrong.

What you do know, is you’re unhappy.

Life isn’t working out they way you imagined it to be—or how you think it “should” be—and you want help.

Whether it’s relationship or family problems, struggles with work and career, problems with anger or addiction, as a licensed professional counselor, I can help.

Look, I understand you might be uncertain whether therapy is really something for you.

You see, I was in your shoes once…

“I’d Rather Have a Root Canal Without Novocain Than Talk About My Feelings”

Hi, my name is Bob Caffrey and I am an attorney-turned-counselor…..The quote above is from one of my male counseling clients, but those words could have just as easily come out of my mouth several years ago.

There was a time when I thought therapy and counseling were something only women did. I really couldn’t imagine how I could benefit from seeing a therapist. And yet, I was dissatisfied with my life, my relationships and my career. I was afraid I wouldn’t “make the grade” as a man. I believed I had to be “strong,” I had to plow through and put on a “brave face” no matter what happened. If I didn’t, I’d be “failing” as a man.

The truth is, it was exhausting.

Fortunately, I started seeing a counselor and a whole new world opened up to me. After being a successful lawyer for 26 years, I decided it was time to head out on a new career path and become a counselor.

My relationships with colleagues improved, my relationship with my wife improved, and most importantly, my relationship with myself improved.

And yes, in order to do this, I had to “get in touch with my feelings.”

And, what a relief it was to finally do that! I had to take a hard look at myself and my life. I came to really know what I did, and didn’t want. I had to discover what made me happy.  I had to realize that I could make different choices if I wanted a more meaningful life. And, I didn’t have to fulfill the “rules” I’d been taught about what a man is “supposed to be”.  I could make my own “rules.”

Now, don’t get me wrong…

This change didn’t mean I had to stop living my life in a strong, competitive, and assertive way. I didn’t have to give up my “manhood” to have a better life.

In fact, going deeper into myself has allowed me to become even more autonomous and stronger. I actually found that counseling has helped me become more centered and grounded in myself. It’s helped me embrace my masculinity, instead of fearing it.

I’ve Had My “Do-Over”; Is It Time For Yours?

Past experiences don’t have to control the rest of your life.

Remember: You don’t have to change who you are… you just have to decide if who you are, is serving you.  And if it’s not, you get to decide how you want to be.

Give Your Problems The One-Two

Look at it like this:  Imagine you’re in a boxing ring with your problems.  When they take a swing at you…

You have 3 choices:

  • Slip the punch
  • Duck the punch or
  • Block the punch

Let me show you how to implement each of these methods effectively and appropriately to help you have a better life.

Think of your counseling with me as training sessions to meet your troubles head-on and quickly fix whatever issues you are dealing with.
